I composed this piece for my grandmother, Maureen Bird, on Oct. 1st 2018. The following day her spirit made the supreme transition, she passed on from this planet and to a greater reality. We were very close and I love her very dearly. The title of the composition stems from the tremendous pride she took in her beautiful, pink rose bush. Every time I visited her while the roses were in bloom she would remind me to take a moment and appreciate her flowers. The album cover features a painting of those roses painted by none other than the woman herself. I love it. This recording is a live performance of the composition performed on April 13th of 2019. It is being released on Oct 16th, 2019, my grandmothers 85th birthday, as a gift and offering to her memory and spirit.
The composition itself contains a mixture of influences and styles of notation. First, it is important to mention that the spoken word readings performed are 11.32 and 8.13 of the Bhagavad Gita as translated by Graham M Schweig. Color notation, poetic instructions, traditional western notation, and the theory of universal tonality are all present within the score. A very large amount of inspiration for this piece came from Sensei Joesph Jarman's 1968 recording "Song for Christopher" from the album "As If it Were the Seasons". The composition was dedicated by Jarman to the pianist Christopher Gaddy who left the material reality after performing on Jarman's first record "Song For".
Thank you so much for listening to this composition that means a tremendous amount to me and was a very big part of the process that allowed me to heal after the supreme transition of my beloved grandmother, Maureen. Sound is possibly the greatest foundation for healing to a mystic. Tone lives on time, time assimilates tone.
