about

This album consists of songs I have known for a long time and mean a lot to me. I have really loved performances of these songs by artists like Doc Watson, The Howard University Gospel Choir, and Pete Seeger. The inspiration to perform these songs in this context comes from improvisors like William Parker, Charlie Haden, and Matthew Shipp. All these artists have performed songs that I believe come from a similar place in the heart as the songs on this recording. Some of these songs were taught to me by my mother when I was very young. Pasty is a meat and potato filled turnover that comes from Cornwall. My family ate it very often in the winter when I was a kid. It has never been a food I enjoy much.
